MONTHLY GATHERINGS

These are held the second Saturday of each Month and usually include a Genealogy "How To..." Workshop, an intermission, a MGS Members' Meeting and a featured Program Speaker.  Admission is FREE to MGS Members.  Non-members are welcome to attend one or two gatherings to "check us out" after which we hope you would join and support the Society.  The MGS Library and Media Center is open BEFORE and AFTER the Members' Meeting and Speaker Program.

    (one block east of S Ann Street in the old Arlington Elementary School building)
     
    10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. AND AGAIN FROM 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
     
    Cost for attendance is $5.00.  You may pre-register at the MGS meeting on February 14th or by mailing your check to the MGS post office box.  The workshop is for MGS members ONLY and is limited to the first 30 who pre-register.  Further information (like attendance availability) may be obtained by phoning (334) 660-7705.

    SCANNER & ADOBE PHOTOSHOP TRAINING WORKSHOPS

    Held at the MGS Library and Media Center

    These are scheduled periodically and fill up FAST.   To get on the waiting list for the next session send an e-mail to Harriet Nihart at <Nihart709@aol.com>.  She will notify you when your turn comes.  Each session is limited to five or six attendees (MGS members ONLY) so that everyone gets ample practice time on the programs.  There is no charge for these sessions, but donations are appreciated and will be earmarked for purchases of additional CD-Roms for our Media Center.

    GENEALOGICAL FIELD TRIP
    to the
    Genealogy Department of the Pascagoula branch of the Jackson-George Regional Library in Pascagoula, Mississippi.

    Thursday, April 16, 1998

    Those who attend will be given a tour of all the facilities and resources in the Genealogy Department.  You need to contact Kevin Sellew at <ksellew@zebra.net> to get on the list.  We will be carpooling.  Kevin will need to know who wants to go and who can drive others.  We will depart from somewhere in Tillman’s Corner in the morning hours and return after lunch.  Details will be provided to those who register.  There is NO CHARGE for this trip, although if you ride with someone else you might consider chipping in for gas.

    Will anyone know who you were 100 years from now?  Do you know your ancestors from 100, 200 or 300 years ago?  Do you know all your cousins who are living today that share common ancestors with you?  This workshop will present you with an overview of the popular and addictive hobby of Genealogy and Family History Research so that you can begin the process that will enable you to answer these questions with a YES!
     
    Some of the topics that will be covered are: 
    Getting Started - Looking At Home - Gathering Family Stories - The 
    Paper Trail - Libraries and Archives - Census & Military Records - 
    African American Research - Native American Research - Your 
    Medical Heritage - High-Tech Help - Leaving a Legacy

    The Periodical Source Index (PERSI) -- an ongoing project of the Allen County (Indiana) Public Library respresenting 27 (!) volumes in print -- is an index to over one million articles from over 5,000 genealogy and local history periodicals written in English and also French-Canadian since 1800.  The collection even includes many articles dating from the 1700s.  Now PERSI is available in CD-Rom format and the MGS Library owns a copy.  Come learn how to use it for YOUR research!
