136. Elijah ??(119) Denny? (Rev.Vet) was born in
1757 in North Carolina ?. per note from Harold McClure, listed as 1753-1863
??
Mr. R.J. Scott Jr:,
With due respect, I would like to offer clarification regarding some of the information
contained on your family page relative to Elijah DENNY.
Elijah DENNY was born in 1757/8, not 1737 (this error is the result of an old
application to the DAR, might even be a typo/ink smear). He died in 1863 at 105
years of age (during the Civil War he was regularly visited by troops from both
sides who wanted to meet a RW vet).
It was first thought that there was a mix up between 2 Elijah DENNY's who had
served in the RW. However, I have copies of the war record, parole, pension application
and an 1938 affidavit from the records administrator stating that they only have
one record for an Elijah Denny/Denney/Dennie/Dennee who served in the RW War.
The only serving Elijah DENNY was a member of the North Carolina Militia. He
was taken prisoner at the siege of Charleston and paroled to his plantation in
Wilkes Co., NC May 20, 1780 by Sir Henry Clinton. (There are numerous, unfounded
stories regarding Elijah's participation in the war. Some have him wounded, some
have him re-enlisting as a Sergeant and others have him fighting with the "Swamp
Fox")
A marriage to someone named Rebecca has not been documented to my knowledge (this
is also from the same DAR application). There is a common belief that Elijah
married first to Mary Owen (not confirmed to my knowledge, but accepted by a
lot of genealogists. Mary was Davids' sister. David had served with Elijah during
the war) and second to Susan Simpson (This marriage is documented through Census
records).
Elijah's headstone reads, in part "This 105-year-old Revolutionary War Soldier.."
He is buried next to Susan (Simpson) Denny. At the time of his death he was the
second oldest living RW veteran, the first oldest was then residing in New York.
Respectfully submitted,
