Burying Ground, Philadelphia, PA. Samson Babb was elected to the high office
of Sheriff of Chester County, PA in 1819. He became the proprietor of a handsome
farm on the Brandywine, and subsequently purchased the Wahington Hotel in West
Chester. In 1841 he became overwhelmed with financial difficulties, and the Washington
Hotel passed on to John Babb, Assignee. In newspaper clippings about his death
there is some difference of opinion , but at age 60 he was fixing a pigeon box
on the outside of the 4th story of a warehouse occupied by his son, and he lost
his balance and fell to his death.
The kneebuckles of Samsons were later melted and the silver used to make silver
serving spoons. These were passed down to Florence, granddaughter of Ida Matilda
Babb, and are now in the possession of her son Richard Joseph Scott, Jr. and
his wife Nancy, at The Oaks in Montrose, AL. He was married to Charity Grubb
